Convict Leasing and the LA Fires

The past is never where we think we left it. During major wildfires, such as those in Los Angeles and other parts of California, incarcerated people often are central in firefighting efforts. The prison labor system of today is not unlike convict leasing which emerged after the civil war. Convict leasing involved the leasing of prisoners to private companies or individuals who used them for labor, often under brutal and inhumane conditions.
